 What a Magnetic Level Gauge Is - and Where It Belongs in the Plant

A magnetic level gauge (MLG) measures liquid level in a sealed external chamber connected to a vessel by its process taps. A magnet-bearing float rides the liquid surface inside the chamber. Because the chamber liquid tracks the vessel liquid, the float position represents the true vessel level. A flag or shuttle indicator mounted on the outside of the chamber couples to the float magnet and flips to show level - without any opening, window, or seal exposed to the process.

This makes the MLG the standard replacement for tubular and armored sight glasses in services where glass breakage or seal failure could release hydrocarbons, steam, or toxic media. Typical process conditions span from vacuum to high pressure, from cryogenic to superheated temperatures, and from clean to corrosive or dirty fluids. The instrument's core purpose is continuous, power-independent, local-level indication that survives the operating envelope of the vessel it serves.

The Problem with Sight Glasses and Wetted Level Instruments

Conventional level methods carry operational liabilities that compound in refining and gas service:

  • Sight (gauge) glasses put a fragile, wetted window directly on the process. Thermal cycling, vibration, and pressure spikes lead to seal leaks, glass clouding, and breakage - each a fugitive-emission and personnel-safety event.
  • Wetted electronic instruments expose diaphragms, seals, and gaskets to the fluid, adding leak paths and maintenance points that must be isolated and recalibrated.
  • Displacers and tape systems drift with changes in density and require frequent recalibration; many cannot be read during a power loss.
  • Turbulent or flashing vessels produce erratic readings when the sensing element sits in the agitated process.

The BAM Series addresses each point directly. The indicator is isolated outside the chamber, so there is no wetted glass and no process-side seal to fail. The float is the only wetted moving part and is engineered for the fluid's specific gravity, temperature, and pressure. For agitated service, an oversized chamber with guide rods dampens turbulence and allows vapor to pass through the vacant area, preventing the float from violent vertical movement. Reading remains visible with no external power.
