Reflex Glass Level Gauge Overview

A reflex glass level gauge bolts a single flat glass against the machined face of a liquid chamber that is connected at the top and bottom to the process vessel through isolating valves. The chamber level tracks the vessel level, and the operator reads it directly on the gauge. Because the indication is purely optical and mechanical, the gauge keeps reading during power loss, transmitter failure, or DCS outage - which is why reflex gauges remain the standard local backup to electronic level transmitters on critical vessels across the Gulf Coast and other oil, gas, and process regions.

Bliss Americas builds reflex gauges in three liquid-chamber series - L, M, and H - selected by the pressure and temperature envelope of the application. All three use a one-piece liquid chamber machined from solid bar stock, recessed and fine-finished gasket seats, and toughened glass clamped by chrome-molybdenum bolting. Visible length is built up from nine standard window sizes; longer spans use multiple windows on a single chamber rather than a welded assembly.

The Indication Problem Reflex Gauges Solve

On vessels handling boiling, flashing, or surging liquids, level indication degrades when the medium vaporizes as pressure drops or when entrained gas disturbs the surface. Conventional sight glasses can fog, leak at the seats, or fracture under thermal and mechanical shock - taking indication offline and, on hydrocarbon or toxic service, opening a release path. Reflex gauges address these failure points by design

  • The prismatic reflex glass produces a high-contrast light/dark interface that stays legible on clear and boiling liquids, where a plain transparent window can wash out.
  • Recessed, fine-finished gasket seats prevent gasket movement and hold a positively leak-proof seal between the chamber and the glass.
  • Toughened borosilicate glass resists thermal and mechanical shock under cycling service.
  • A stainless-steel ball check in the isolating valve seats instantly on glass breakage, shutting off the gauged medium and isolating the vessel.
  • For low-boiling-point liquids, the large-chamber Series L design reduces the boiling effects of entrained gas released under lowered pressure; gauges can be insulated and fitted with non-frosting shields for sub-zero service.
