Sight Flow Indicator (Flanged Type)

Bliss Flanged Sight Flow Indicators offer a simple, direct way to observe the flow of liquids or gases in process pipelines. Designed with double windows and robust construction, they provide operators with immediate, reliable confirmation of flow conditions—something electronic sensors cannot always ensure. By combining clear visibility, rugged materials, and versatile installation options, Bliss flanged indicators deliver superior performance across industries such as oil & gas, petrochemicals, power, water treatment, and pharmaceuticals.

Features

  • Sight Flow Indicators (Flanged Type) Overview

A flanged sight flow indicator is an in-line fitting with glass windows on both faces of the body, terminated in raised-face flanges that bolt directly into the pipeline. The double-window construction places glass on opposing sides so the line of sight passes straight through the bore, giving a clear view of the medium even on darker or partially opaque fluids.

The flanged connection is what distinguishes this range from the screwed type: it is the standard choice for larger-bore lines, higher-flange-rated service, and installations where the joint must be made and broken repeatedly without damaging the threaded ends.

Each unit provides a positive indication of flow rate, flow direction, and the condition of the medium being transported, and serves as a means of inspecting the line for dirt, scale, and foreign matter. Bliss Americas supplies the flanged range in three internal-element styles - rotary, flapper, and drip - across three ANSI flange classes, so the indicator is matched to the fluid, the flow orientation, and the line’s pressure class.

Industrial Challenges: Why Direct Visual Confirmation Matters

Electronic flow instruments report a value, but they cannot confirm that the value reflects reality. When a transmitter reads low or zero, the crew cannot tell from the signal alone whether the line is genuinely starved or the instrument has failed, fouled, or lost signal. On a large-bore process line, diagnosing that by isolating and opening the line is costly.

A flanged sight flow indicator removes the ambiguity. It is a major advantage over electronic-only devices, where it is difficult to distinguish an actual flow problem from a device malfunction. At a glance, the indicator confirms:

    • Flow presence: whether the medium is moving at all,
    • Flow direction: the direction of travel, on cross-tied and reversible lines,
    • Approximate rate: relative rate, from flapper position or rotor speed,
    • Medium condition: entrained dirt, scale, particulate, slurry behavior, color change, two-phase carryover, or aeration that an electronic reading would never surface.

    Applications by Industry

Demand for flanged sight flow indicators is strongest in Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma, where refinery, petrochemical, LNG, power generation, and upstream/midstream oil & gas operations require direct visual confirmation of flow on larger-bore, higher-pressure process lines.

    • Oil & Gas / Refining: hydrocarbon lines, process flow monitoring, pump discharge verification, and gas flow checks across upstream, midstream, and downstream.
    • Petrochemical: process and product lines, chemical dosing, distillation overhead and reflux observation, and sample lines.
    • Chemical Processing: chemical dosing and injection, reagent feed, slurry transfer, and corrosive-service verification (stainless and alloy bodies; Teflon-lined glass option).
    • Power Generation: cooling water systems, lubrication oil lines, steam condensate, and pump discharge confirmation.
    • Water Treatment: intake, transfer, coagulant and chlorine dosing, and filtration system confirmation.
    • Distillation / LNG & Gas Processing: downward-vertical drip observation on distillation and similar low- or intermittent-flow apparatus (3000F).
    • Utility & Process Pipelines: cooling water, seal flush, lube oil, filtration, and utility service lines.
